Signal and Noise
I took a break from Farcaster and Twitter for ~ 10 days over the holidays. Like many in crypto, I have an addiction to the stimulus these networks provide, and am afraid of missing out on a 100x because I was touching grass.
With the holidays coming up it felt clear there would be no 100x's and I wanted to be present with my family & friends, as well as see what thoughts might emerge if I unplugged fully for the first time in a while.
I actually cheated and logged back in a few times, but didn't post anything, and was generally put off or bored by what I was seeing. I wanted to write down a few thoughts, mostly for myself:
- I logged in one day and saw some heated discourse about H1B visas. It was very intense, everyone had picked sides, but the funniest part was that no one in the real world knew this was happening and I just couldn't have cared less. It made me realize how absurd this little world is. This is sometimes Twitter's advantage - it can be early to important conversations, but also talks about ridiculous things most of the time.
- There is just so much noise. Most things you read on Twitter have 0 impact on your life. They will not help you be more creative, they will not bring you joy, they will not make you a better person, they will not connect you to others. They may make you chuckle or be angry or go "hmm".
- The hard part, though, is that there is true signal. Just this morning, I found an article there that I really enjoyed. It made me think about several things, gave me several other articles to read. I also discovered this website through Twitter. Most of what happens in crypto happens on Twitter. It's critical to keeping a pulse on our industry.
- Not being on Twitter and Farcaster made me more relaxed about my work, my financial situation, my life. Even the things I love tend to control me when I'm on these networks because I'm always seeing competition, people telling me what I should be doing, and just generally being overstimulated.
So what is an ambiguously employed young man working and investing in digital assets to do? I'm not sure. One option seems to be a highly curated list on Twitter, and staying as far away from the algorithmic feed as possible. Potentially focusing more energy on writing and reading long-form, slowing down my brain such that it rejects the feed as pure junk. Screentime doesn't work for me.
Hoping to create more things like this - mini blog posts written and edited in less than an hour.
