Society Gets what it Needs
Niell Howe notes in his theory of saeculums that generations throughout time tend not to get what they want, but this dependable pursuit ensures that society gets what it needs and progresses forward.
Experts across fields from economics to politics, art, and everywhere in between have pointed to these cycles that dependably occur throughout history. History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. This model has led to a sort of analogy for me to think of history as similar to the motion of our solar system. It is unrealistic to view time as cyclical, but similar to the earth rotating around the sun, it makes for a simple understanding of how these historical events can help paint the picture of the future. But it is clear that we are progressing throughout time in a similar way that a proper understanding of our solar system's motion includes the bigger picture of these gravitational forces also being propelled through space at an ever-advancing speed. Human society is similarly being hurtled through time following recognizable patterns that, as Niell Howe describes, can be correlated to the turn of generations.
As we work through this current Fourth Turning, it is no secret that the propellant of technology is going to make for a fantastic crisis. These are years that will be discussed and studied for generations to come.
