You can break down every interaction on the internet into three things: extracting information, adding information, and executing on information.

Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) were invented to allow humans to interact with computers, or they were at least an attempt to make things like the web usable to everyone. While the interfaces you saw back in the 80s and ones today look completely different, humans still use the internet for the same three actions.

However, one thing has never sat well with me. Historically, humans have always been "forced" to learn how to use software. Do you remember your first time using Excel?

AI can be the inflection point. The "right" interface for AI does not exist yet. It can very much be generative UI, chat, or maybe even no interface at all. If you're a toolmaker in this space, the next few years will be pivotal – you are possibly dictating how billions of people will interact with this technology. Be grateful for this opportunity, and mindful. The true interface for technology should be unrealistically mindful. A fluid system that works around the human, rather than making the human work around a rigid system.

So, how do we redesign the way humans interact with the internet? The first step is to forget everything you know about interfaces today and come back to the 3 things that humans do on the internet: extracting information, adding information, and executing on information. Refocus on the human, reassemble the building blocks, and make machines work for humans.
